Nintendo Switch Games for Kids
Choosing a game for your child is harder than it looks. There are now two consoles, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, thousands of games and age labels that don’t always match what a child can actually handle.
This guide picks 16 games that are fun, age-appropriate and good for playing together as a family. For each one you’ll see which console it runs on, its official PEGI age rating and how many players can join on one console.
Quick picks:
- Best for the whole family: Mario Kart World (Switch 2) or Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch and Switch 2)
- Best calm, creative game: Pokémon Pokopia (Switch 2) or Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch and Switch 2)
- Best for getting kids moving: Nintendo Switch Sports (Switch and Switch 2)
- Best for kids aged 9 to 12: Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Switch and Switch 2)
How We Chose These Games
We focused on games that are easy to start, fun to play together and suitable in content for children. We checked every PEGI rating, release date and player count on Nintendo’s official European website, and we compared our picks with recent expert reviews. Every game on the list is already available; nothing here is a pre-order.
Nintendo Switch or Switch 2: What Parents Need to Know
Nintendo Switch 2 launched on 5 June 2025. In Spain its official price rose from €469.99 to €499.99 on 1 September 2026, although shops often sell it for less.
The key points for parents:
- Most original Switch games work on Switch 2. If you already own Switch games, your child can keep playing them on the new console.
- Switch 2 games do not work on the original Switch. In the list below, games marked “Switch 2” need the new console.
- Some games have a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”. This is an improved version, sometimes with extra content. If you own the original game, you can usually buy a cheaper upgrade pack instead of the full game.
How to Read Age Ratings (PEGI)
In Spain and the rest of Europe, games are rated by PEGI. The number is the minimum recommended age based on the game’s content:
- PEGI 3: suitable for all ages.
- PEGI 7: may include mildly scary scenes or cartoon fighting with no realistic harm.
- PEGI 12 and above: more realistic violence or mature themes. None of the games in this guide are rated above PEGI 7.
PEGI tells you about content, not difficulty. A PEGI 3 game can still require reading or quick reactions that a 4-year-old doesn’t have yet. That’s why we also suggest an age for each game.
Note: many American guides use the US ESRB system (E, E10+, T). Those labels are not used in Spain, so we list PEGI only.

The Best Nintendo Switch 2 Games for Kids
1. Mario Kart World
Mario Kart World is the easiest game to recommend to families. Up to four players can race on one console, and assist options such as smart steering help younger children stay on the track and finish races. A free update in September 2026 added classic tracks from the original Super Nintendo Mario Kart. Still on the original Switch? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (PEGI 3) offers the same family fun.
Best for: family evenings, mixed ages, kids who are just starting to play.
2. Pokémon Pokopia
Pokopia is a calm building game. Your child plays as a Ditto who rebuilds an empty world and creates habitats so that Pokémon come to live there. There is no time pressure and very little fighting, which makes it a good choice for children who prefer creating over competing. It is mostly a single-player game.
Best for: creative kids, Pokémon fans who don’t like battles.
3. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
Released in May 2026, this gentle platformer takes Yoshi through the pages of a talking encyclopedia. Children discover dozens of creatures, learn what each one can do and use them to solve simple puzzles. Curiosity is rewarded more than speed, and tokens can be swapped for hints when a child gets stuck. A free demo is available.
Best for: curious younger players, children who like animals and nature.
4. Mario Tennis Fever
A colourful tennis game with power-ups, simple controls and a large cast of Mario characters. Up to four players can play on one console. Its Swing Mode lets children swing the Joy-Con like a real racket, which gets them off the sofa.
Best for: competitive siblings, kids who like sport.
5. Kirby Air Riders
A fast, simple racing game with Kirby and friends. Controls use very few buttons, so younger players can join in quickly, and up to four people can play on one console. It is rated PEGI 7 for mild cartoon fighting and some scary scenes.
Best for: kids aged 7 and up who enjoy speed.
6. Donkey Kong Bananza
A big 3D adventure where Donkey Kong punches and digs through almost everything in the world. It’s very satisfying to play, but some levels are challenging, so it suits children aged 8 and up. A second player can join to help, which works well for a parent and child together.
Best for: adventure fans, playing as a parent-and-child team.
The Best Games That Work on Both Switch and Switch 2
7. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
A classic side-scrolling Mario game full of surprises: flowers that change the whole level, talking plants and new power-ups. Up to four players can play together, and some characters can’t take damage, which makes them perfect for younger children. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (March 2026) adds a new area with extra party games.
Best for: first platform game, family co-op.
8. Super Mario Party Jamboree
A digital board game with more than 100 mini-games. It’s easy to learn, and turns are short enough to keep young players interested. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds Jamboree TV, with games that use motion controls, the microphone and a camera.
Best for: birthdays, sleepovers and rainy afternoons.
9. Nintendo Switch Sports
Tennis, bowling, football, volleyball, badminton, golf, basketball and sword fighting, all played by moving the Joy-Con. Up to four players can play on one console, and it’s one of the few games that genuinely gets the whole family on its feet. A bigger follow-up, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, arrives on Switch 2 on 22 October 2026.
Best for: active play at home, grandparents and kids playing together.
10. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Children build their own island, decorate their house and make friends with animal neighbours. There is no way to lose, and the game rewards patience and creativity. A free update in January 2026 added new content for both consoles, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds mouse controls for decorating.
Best for: calm play, kids who love designing and collecting.
11. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Released in April 2026, this funny life simulation lets children create Mii characters, often based on family and friends, and watch them make friends, argue and fall in love on an island. It involves quite a lot of reading, so it works best from about 7 years old. It is a single-player game.
Best for: imaginative kids, children who enjoy stories.
12. Rhythm Paradise Groove
Known as Rhythm Heaven Groove in the US, this game (July 2026) collects more than 80 short rhythm games where you press buttons in time with funny songs, plus over 30 multiplayer games for up to four players. Rounds last a minute or two, so it’s easy to pick up and put down. It’s also good practice for timing and listening.
Best for: music lovers, short play sessions.
13. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby’s first full 3D adventure is bright, cheerful and forgiving, so younger players can make progress. A second player can join as Bandana Waddle Dee. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds a new story, Star-Crossed World.
Best for: a first 3D adventure, play with a parent.
14. Luigi’s Mansion 3
Luigi explores a haunted hotel with his ghost-catching vacuum. The ghosts are more funny than frightening, and a second player can control Gooigi, a jelly copy of Luigi, making it a great game for a parent and child. Very sensitive younger children may find a few moments spooky, which is why it’s rated PEGI 7.
Best for: puzzle lovers, co-op with a parent.
15. Minecraft
Minecraft remains the classic creative game. Children build anything they can imagine and learn planning and problem-solving along the way. On Peaceful difficulty there are no enemies at all. If your child plays online, set up chat and friend restrictions first (see the parental controls section below).
Best for: builders aged 8 and up.
16. Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Set in a Pokémon version of Paris, this game uses real-time battles instead of turn-based ones. It needs a fair amount of reading and strategy, so it suits children aged 9 and up. It runs on both consoles, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition looks and runs better.
Best for: older Pokémon fans.

Parental Controls and Healthy Screen Time
Nintendo’s free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app works with both consoles. With it you can:
- set a daily time limit and see how long your child plays
- block games above a chosen PEGI age
- restrict online chat, posting and purchases in the eShop
Games are most useful when they are part of a balanced day. A simple rule that works for many families: screen time after active play, not instead of it. Read more in our guide to screen time vs active play, or see our wider list of the best video games for kids.
